The Jet Lagged Golf Swing

July 31st, 2008

The golf travel industry is huge. Destination resorts such as Myrtle Beach, Hawaii, Palm Springs, and Phoenix are springing up all over. Developers are not just hoping for the Field of Dreams…build it and they will come….they know folks will come.
Look at business. So many business relationships and transactions are being done on the links. And it’s happening all over the globe.
Certain trips you are able to bring your clubs; others times not.
We are going to talk about how travel affects your body and your swing while playing golf or not playing. We will also discuss what can help you with that horrid jet lag that can easily hinder your performance on the course or in the board room.
I write this article from experience. I am currently in my third year on the PGA tour as a trainer. I travel all over the globe with the tour. So I understand what it is like to “live” out of a suitcase and not have everything available to you. Granted, we always have golf clubs with us, but I have some innovative ways to keep your game in shape.
This article is not about swing drills. Rather, this article will discuss how to keep your swing in shape from a more global perspective. Much of the information in this article is from personal observation, individual trial and error, and some tips from some experienced professionals.
Jet Lag. It can be a “Killer” on your golf game
As I write, I am sitting here at the world famous Doral Golf and Spa Resort in Miami. Tough duty I have this week. This course is host of the Ford Championship Golf Tournament. I flew in from San Diego last night. So there is a 3-hour time difference, a 4-hour flight, and let’s just say I got up this morning at 2:30 am Pacific Standard time (5:30 Eastern Standard time). So to sum it up, I know a thing or two about jet lag.
Because I am a personal trainer for Phil Mickelson, I’ve spent a lot of time researching and developing ways to help Phil perform better. That also includes his travel and getting his body ready for competition. Let us first start at the beginning with the flight. Research has indicated that whenever you fly the body becomes dehydrated. Why is this so? I guess it has something to do with the cabin of the airplane being pressurized.
Drinking lots of water is the first line of defense in battling jet lag. Drink water before you take off, during the flight, and once you land. Even if you have to go to the lavatory a couple times in flight, your body and your golf game will thank you.
We’re talking about water. Not soda, not coffee, and sorry, not alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates the body, so when you are in the air you get a double whammy. Good old H2O. Now what to do after you land?
I have found the greatest success in the war against Jet Lag is immediately changing to the present time zone. I know it can be tough having to go to bed 3 hours later than what you are accustomed to, but, believe me, in a day or so it will pay big dividends. I found this to really help.
Those are the two biggest tips I found to beneficial to jet lag.
Some other of Sensei Sean’s helpful hints are regulating your workouts and eating healthy foods. Workouts for me get that blood pumping and the body moving. I don’t feel lethargic on the road if I workout regularly. Now a workout can be something like a twenty minute brisk walk or run around the hotel. Just get something into your schedule that gets the blood pumping. Finally, another key to not getting “stung” by jet lag is what you eat. If I eat healthy meals, my body is more alert and running efficiently. If I chow down on fast food or candy, my body starts to get run down.
Keeping the Golf Game in Shape on the Road
I am certainly not a swing coach, and the suggestions in this article are merely from my personal experiences from traveling on the tour. Some good friends of mine (Rick Smith and Dave Pelz) are some of the best swing coaches in the world. I would suggest taking a look at some of their videos/articles for specific drills.
Now I realize that when you are traveling on business, time is limited to say the least. And probably more times than not you won’t have your clubs on the road. So what is the amateur to do? Well, what if I told you that it is possible to work on your swing in about 15 minutes a day without any equipment? Would that get you motivated to do a little work on the road? I imagine you would because I think we all have 15 minutes a day to spend on our swing.
We can work on three things without clubs. Number one, we can work on the mechanics of your swing; number two, we can work on the machinery (your body) that makes the swing go; and we can work on the mind. Putting all three of these entities together is what I feel is a complete training program for your swing. Forget about one and it’s like not including sugar in that cake recipe. Yuck! You are leaving yourself out of the game.
I have been given a great series of “mirror” drills by my instructor to work on my swing, and I am guessing your instructor has given you something similar. If not, I know both Rick Smith and Jim McLean have a number of drills that are done without clubs. Just take a look at the Golf Channel and you can probably pick up on a few of these drills. The great thing is I can do these drills anywhere and I do not need any equipment. So first off, spend 5 minutes a day in your hotel doing swing drills.
Once done with the swing drills, let’s work on the body. The body is what drives your swing and needs just as much attention as your swing itself. The pros work on their body every day, so why can’t the amateurs. Take the next 5 minutes and do “golf strengthening” drills that train the body for your swing. These exercises take no equipment and can be done in the comfort of your hotel room.
Finally, spend the final 5 minutes of your training session on the mind. Numerous books exist on the mental side of golf. I bet if you pick one of these books up at the bookstore, any number of them will have daily drills to perform. Perform these drills for five minutes.
So there you have it! Stay hydrated, set your body to the local time as quickly as you can, eat good foods for your body and get some exercise. For the mechanics of the swing, develop a set of in-room mirror drills to keep in the groove. Now if you have your clubs on the road, the swing drills can be done for 5 minutes with your clubs. If you are looking for additional information on how to train the body for the golf swing, that’s where I can help you. Take a look at the web site www.bioforcegolf.com to get information on such programs.

Houseboat Rental

July 31st, 2008

You have lived on ground almost all your life so its about time to wake up to a new life on a boat. Houseboating has become a popular past time for both the young and old, especially attracted by the thrill of living on rivers and lakes and enjoying its green banks. Of late, housbeoating rental companies have tried to add a lot of incentives to this boating holiday to make visitors feel like they are in an urban setting. Some boats now feature fully connected satelite tv, gas cookers, radios, etc.
You can book a houseboat for a day, two weeks or a month as your plans require. Ther are several companies offering visitors the ability to rent their boats and explore rivers upstream or downstream, seeing lakes and rivers in all their beauty and scenery. For bird watchers and environmental enthusiasts, this is a great opportunity to combine a holiday with business exploration..
Going on a houseboating adventure differs not much from an ordinary camping. You need to take enough suplies but not bedding as the houseboats are equiped with beds and sitting room furniture to imitate everyday household living conditions. You may however need to take along food and drink supplies . Of late some people, send along water skis and some fishing rods to do some fishing.
One company at the forefront of houseboat renting is Sunset Marina and Resort, loacted at Sunset Marina and Resort Sunset Dock Rd.Byrdstown, TN and online at http://www.sunsetmarina.com. The company has a new 20′ wide boat which can be used to explore the entire Dale Hollow Lake at a great comfort. The boat has 6 private bedrooms with closets, 2 full baths and a fly bridge with canopy top and hot tubs.
If you intend to go on a houseboat vacation, you will have to know something about the high and low seasons. During the high seasosn, expect to pay as much as $1,500 to $3,000 a week depnding on facilities available. A low season price can be between $800 to $1500 depending on facilities again.
Find out from the boating company which routes the craft will pass. If you intend to go on environmental or eco holiday, you will need rivers with a lot of wild life scenery and game. If you intend to do fishing, you will need a river with a lot of fresh water fish.
Also, make a good assessment of how much space you will need so that you do not waste space or find yourself overcrowded.
Take along food supplies even if you are assured of sale by local stores. Though these stores will relieve you of the burden of carrying food all the way to the rivers, they cannot be counted on all the time as they may close for one reason or the other.
Houseboating is one holiday option you will love to patronise. Rivers, lakes and waterfronts all help to create an atmosphere of nature, quite relieving you from the concerns of urban neighborhoods.

Eurobasket 2005 France Knocks Out Serbia 74 71

July 30th, 2008

Everything started good and Zeljko Obradovic’s players have built a good 23:18 score at the end of the first quarter, but as the game was closing to and end, quarter by quarter the French have boosted up their pace and took the lead at the beginning of the last period, and ended it 71:74 in their favor with what they shortened the whole host nation to see their team in the Quarter Finals.
Quarter One
Serbia and Montenegro 23 France 18
The Serbs chose to begin with Marko Jaric and Igor Rakocevic as the playmakers and Radmanovic and Milan Gurovic as frontmen and Zeljko Rebraca was the only center. For one minute and twenty seconds the French had a 0:4 lead but Radmanovic neutralized it with a three pointer and Marko Jaric brought the Serbs the lead 5:4. At the beginning of the fifth minute Rebraca made a fantastic dunk with both arms over Julien and it was 77 just so Jaric regains the Blues their lead and increase it with a three pointer 12:9. By the end Rakocevic scored six points, Jaric two more and Rebraca two more to make it 23:18. On the other side Antoine Rigaudeau has played his best match so far, but let’s just stick to the first quarter he netted 5 pts out of what one was a three pointer, and Mickael Gelabale did the same, what kept the French in life.
Quarter Two
Serbia and Montenegro 21 France 17
Although Obradovic started the second period with the same first five he quickly changed Rebraca with Krstic and Jaric with Avdalovic. Milan Gurovic opened the score sheet in this quarter with a nice three pointer and Dejan Bodiroga and Nenad Krstic increased the lead on 29:18 in the first two minutes. In the fourth minute Jaric made an excellent block over Gelabale from behind, and Bodiroga shortly made it 34:22 with a three pointer. The Blues captain scored three more points until the end and Radmanovic finished the quarter with a great three pointer a few seconds before the finish of the first half. French NBA ace Tony Parker started scoring in this quarter and got to 6pts out of which 4 were from a free point line. But the turn point was the entrance of 218 tall Frederic Weis who disrupted the Blues game under the basket.
Quarter Three
Serbia and Montenegro 13 France 19
The Blues only held on to the lead in this quarter thanks to Vladimir Radmanovic who tied two three pointers as the last Serb points in this period. The remaining starters were Rakocevic, Scepanovic, Jaric and Rebraca but except Radmanovic who scored in total 8pts in this quarter nobody really done anything important, so the French won this quarter 13:19, Rigodeau was their best scorer with 7pts, Parker scored 6pts, same as Boris Diaw and Weiss made 2pts like Gelabale.
Quarter Four
Serbia and Montenegro 14 France 20
The biggest mistake in this quarter that Obradovic made was leaving Nenad Krstic in the line up for so most of the time. The New Jersey Nets center started missing free throws and couldn’t fight of the French centers. Some minute before the finish Obradovic finally placed Darko Milicic on the pitch and the youngster already had made a offensive rebound… but that was too late. Gurovic was missing three pointers earlier but 1 minute and 5 seconds before the end Bodiroga had hit a 3 pointer but Krstic made an offensive foul that of course didn’t help the Serbs a lot and practically the match was over right then. And a second before the finish Vladimir Scepanovic missed a three pointer to level, so the score remained 71:74 for the French and thousands of people in the SPENS dome hoping to see them get to over time, were left disappointed and together with them the former Serbian aces like Aleksandar Djordjevic, Vlade, Divac, Zoran Savic, Zarko Paspalj and Predrag Danilovic.
Statistics
Serbia and Montenegro: Bodiroga 10pts (21min, 2/5 for three points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal), Milicic 0pts (1min, 1 offensive rebound, 1 steal), Avdalovic 0pts (8min, 2 rebounds), Radmanovic 14pts (18min, 1 rebounds 4/5 for three pts), Rakocevic 11pts (36min, 1 rebound, 4 assists, 3 steals), Scepanovic 0pts (16min, 1 assist), Jaric 14pts (36min, 1 rebound, 5 assists, 5 steals), Rebraca 4pts (21min, 5 rebounds), Krstic 11pts (19min, 6 rebounds, 1 steal), Gurovic 7pts (24min, 3 rebounds, 1 assist).
France: Gelabale 12pts (29min, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal), Rigaudeau 14pts (28min, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal), Julian 6pts (18min, 5 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block), M.Pietrus 8pts (28min, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks), Parker 13pts (23min, 1 rebound, 3 assists, 2 steals), F.Pietrus 5pts (23min, 4 rebounds), Schmitt 2pts (4min, 2 rebounds), Diaw 10pts (33min, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block), Weis 4pts (12min, 4 rebounds).

Fishing By Moon Phase Increase Your Catch

July 30th, 2008

Every fisherman dreams of a bigger catch! Is it possible to know beforehand when you should plan a trip to enjoy some fishing, catch more than usual, and come home feeling 100% satisfied? Based on my own personal research around the best fishing times, I think it is.
When I first started fishing, the best fishing time for me was whatever time happened to suit me. I tried different lures, baits and techniques until I’d spent a small fortune in my quest to improve my fishing catch. When I finally heard about the “Solunar Theory”–or fishing by moon phase–like most anglers, I was skeptical.
What I’d read sounded too complicated. All sorts of factors needed to be checked and the determined angler needed to be at the water’s edge at exactly the right time, TO THE MINUTE, in order to improve on his average catch. Was I really willing to take my hobby that seriously? Let’s just say that curiosity got the better of me.
To help me determine whether there was any truth in the moon’s effect on the best fishing times, I kept a record of every trip I made over a period of 18 months. All information related to the moon’s phases, the weather conditions and the catches I made were carefully logged. What I discovered convinced me that moon phase fishing works. BUT, I also found that it isn’t anywhere near as complicated as many would have us believe.
How Does Fishing By Moon Phase Work?
Every fisherman knows that the best fishing times are when the fish are feeding. This tends to be during dawn and dusk, but what often goes unnoticed are the two periods elsewhere in the day–moonrise and moonset. Because the moon has an effect on a variety of factors surrounding the fish–including the live fodder they hunt–these periods, combined with the moon’s phase, are what trigger feeding.
By understanding this, and choosing times when sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset coincide with new or full moon phases, you’ll increase you chance of a good fishing catch. Assuming there are fish in the area, of course.
Choosing The Best Fishing Times
There really is nothing complicated about this at all; it’s just a matter of knowing ahead of time exactly when the sun and moon will rise and set. Fish are most active during 90-minute windows surrounding each of these four daily events; that’s 45 minutes before and after these four daily points.
Fishing during these four periods will help increase your fishing catch, but if you plan wisely so as to ensure you’re at the water’s edge on the days of new or full moon, you can use these ‘windows’ to reel in a catch like you’ve never done before. If you have to choose between sunrise/set and moonrise/set, always go with the moon as the moon is the stronger influence.
Hunters have always known that fish and game are most active at dawn and dusk–sunrise and sunset–but their activity surrounding moonrise and moonset is less noticeable because these events are likely to occur without e-ffecting any change in the perceived light. The rise and set of a new moon is invisible anyway, and overcast weather often hides the moon. Without prior knowledge of setting and rising times, two of the best fishing times will be missed every day!
Other Considerations
When planning your fishing by moon phase, there are certain other factors that should also be considered.
Weather - Severe weather changes have an impact on the way fish feed. When a storm’s brewing, or just after one has passed, is a good time. If this happens while you’re in place, you’ll be in for a treat! However, if there’s a cold front approaching, the fish are likely to move deeper into the water and become inactive.
Season - Most fish are more likely to bite willingly during seasonal transitions with the transition from winter to spring and summer to fall being the two best fishing times.
Now that you know that moon phase fishing really works, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t utilize this knowledge to increase your own fishing catch by being at the ready with your rod during the best fishing times available. It’s easy and it works!
Good luck!

Texas Hold Em Strategy A Basic Guide For Beginners

July 29th, 2008

As you begin to learn the game, in order to increase your
odds of winning each time you set down to play, you’ll need
to learn some basic Texas Hold’em strategy. It’s been
proven time after time, that those who have a plan to reach
their goals, in business, at play, or in any area of life,
accomplish more than those without a plan. Think of
learning the basic Texas Hold’em strategy as your plan of
action to beat the other players at the table.

After you get a bit of experience playing the game, and you
are solid on the basic rules, it’s time to begin to develop
your Texas Hold’em strategy. Most players just learning
the game online start out playing the low limit Texas
Hold’em. This is probably the most difficult type to
establish a consistent winning pattern.

You’ll need to think of playing the low limit as a form of
training or a place to improve your Texas Hold’em strategy.
As you play online, remember that most of the other players
in the low limit game are beginning, just like you. That’s
not to say they aren’t more accomplished players offline
who are online or on a particular site for the first time.
Either way, you simply need to concentrate on developing
your Texas Hold’em strategy.

The evaluation of your starting hand and your position or
where you are in the bid line-up is a good place to begin
to evaluate Texas Hold’em strategy. Obviously, a portion
of the strategy is to try to determine how your hand with
the flop stands up against those betting against you. If
you’re the last person to bet, you can possibly have a
loose bet depending on how those before you have placed
their bets.

The way they have placed their bets can give you a good
indication of their hand that is if you’re really
concentrating and focusing on the players and the bets they
make. This gives you more info to help you decide how to
play your hand.

Next comes the bluffing portion of Texas strategy. This
can be complicated. Typically, players with a mid-line
good hand might attempt to bluff. By being strong in
understanding what hand beast what, you can more
effectively decide whether to attempt to bluff or not.
This Texas hold’em strategy can sometime payoff with big
rewards. Of course as with all betting it can also do the
reverse. If you decide to bluff, be sure to calculate your
position, your funds, and focus more on exactly what you’re
willing to lose rather than solely on what you might win.

Taking the time to learn Texas Hold’em strategy is well
worth the efforts, especially if you plan to play a lot.
Having a Texas hold’em strategy, knowing you won because
of your strategy is a very rewarding and exciting feeling.

Lots of luck and have fun!

Taking The Odds Away From The House

July 28th, 2008

Gambling is an addiction many say and a risk that cannot be outmatched. The odds always favor the house and the player is simply waiting to lose all.
Yet, if a person is willing to logically proceed with the game and puts his emotions aside the house can lose.
It’s simple, the house always wins because the player never stops betting. You win $500 you say, “Hey its my lucky day” and bet again and again and again. The sure way to loss.
More tips at http://www.gamesnmore.org
The trick is knowing when to stop. Start with a plan. Think positive. Decide how much you are willing to bet and also how much you are willing to win. Lets says the $1000. Start with small bets and work your way to more. If you win continuosly, get up when you are on a high. Yes, thats the moment to stop. You have won $800 making a total of $1800 walk away.
The house allows only a certain amount to be won and lost per table. Walk away when you are feeling the ‘best’ and come back the next day.
I guarantee that slowly but steadily you will beat the house.

Online Bingo Internet Craze

July 28th, 2008

You’ve heard of bingo, what about online bingo?
Traditional Bingo has been a popular pastime for many years throughout the world. It’s a great meeting place for friends and family and a great place to meet new people in such a relaxed atmosphere. It’s no surprise that there are over 60 million bingo players worldwide.
The average bingo player is predominately female, aged 30-60, and is located in North America. Avid bingo players stick to their routines, such as playing bingo on certain nights of the week, each and every week. Playing bingo becomes part of their routine, part of their way of life. They start to form a friendship with the players around them and players will easily notice if a regular is not there. Most bingo players even have a lucky seat. Traditional bingo halls can however be a tad smoky, it’s sometimes difficult to manage multiple bingo cards, and some players struggle to get to the bingo halls or they simply do not have the time, especially for stay at home moms.
Wait, now there’s a new form of bingo, an evolution in the bingo generation. Its bingo on the internet, online bingo! You may ask yourself, how can playing bingo online give the same satisfaction as playing bingo with family and fiends in a traditional bingo hall? Why should I change my lifestyle?
The fact of the matter is that Online Bingo has its own set of unique advantages. In a recent survey done by a popular online bingo portal, the number one reason for playing online bingo, was “meeting new people”.
Playing online bingo tears down borders and allows you to play online bingo live against other players around the world. You heard me correctly; online bingo is multi player, one game with players from all over the world. Each site has Multi Chat which is accompanied by a Chat Host also known as a CM. It’s the job of the Chat Host to recreate the atmosphere of the bingo hall and to help with support. Multi chat also allows you to meet new friends and to share to excitement in real-time, such as when you have 1 number to go, you will see the acronym “1TG”, which is one to go!
You wanted to socialize with your friends, there you go, hundreds of new friends at the press of a button. Hours of chatting, hours of fun! Online Bingo is attracting males and females, young and old.
There are many advantages to playing online bingo. What if your local bingo hall is not near you house? What if the weather outside is terrible? What if you are not feeling like getting dressed and driving all the way to the smoke filled bingo hall? What if you are disabled and find it difficult to move around? What if you are simply too exhausted from the days work? The answer to all your questions is online bingo. Just go and sit in front of the computer, visit you favorite online bingo site (http://www.bingogringo.com), click and you are ready to play, ready to be transported into the amazing world of online bingo.
Online Bingo sites have colorful graphics and entertaining sound effects. The new generation of online bingo site allows you to play bingo instantly without downloading a thing. When you sit down at your computer watching the screen; you are transformed into a world of bingo.
Due to improved technology you can play as many cards as you want Your bingo cards are filled in automatically , so you don’t need to worry about completing your cards and worry if you missed out a couple of calls. You can also increase your odds of winning with more cards. And if you have the lucky card, your account is credited automatically. A new online bingo site (http://www.online-bingo.com), is offering a one million dollar jackpot every month. I doubt there is a local bingo hall offering that.
Simply put, online bingo games industries have really done a great job on giving the online players a bingo hall atmosphere. And for the best part, its always open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and you can enjoy the game in the convenience of your own home.
It was found that during the Super Bowl, online bingo sites have a massive increase in traffic. That’s right; you can play whenever you want and you don’t have to sit around while your husband relaxes in front of the TV watching sports.
Online bingo can never replace your local bingo hall, but both online and offline bingo seems to have their own set of unique advantages.
So, if you’re bored with the every day routine or if you just want to escape to a special place, jump in front of the computer and stand in line to win great cash prizes, you never know may even win the jackpot! To get started, you can pick a site from your favorite online bingo portal or try out this new no download online bingo site (http://www.online-bingo.com).

Yoga Accessories Getting What You Really Need

July 27th, 2008

Unlike some other sports, you don’t need a lot of yoga accessories when you practice. With yoga, your body is really the most important ‘equipment’ that you need. There are some items that are basic and which can help you be more comfortable and safer in your practice.
Standard Yoga Accessories
Clothing - Your clothing should be comfortable and breathable and allow you to move freely. You don’t want anything that is going to get in the way of your movements or that will bunch up or create a distraction. For instance, oversized, loose fitting tee shirts can fall towards your face during some inversion poses and cause you to pay more attention to whether or not anything is showing, than to the actual asana. If you are taking a class, your instructor might want you to wear something form fitting in order to check your alignment.
Shorts are often a good choice, if the whether permits, because you tend to get very warm from doing the asanas and your body temperature heats up. In some types of yoga, such as Bikram, shorts are really a necessity because of the level of heat in the room.
Although yoga is usually practiced barefoot, some people wear cotton socks or soft yoga shoes.
Mat - Yoga mats are typically used during practice, especially in a class. They offer some padding so you are not lying or sitting directly on a hard floor. They also provide some level of sanitation, since a number of postures require you to put your head on the floor.
A mat also gives you traction during your poses. When your body heats up, you have a tendency to sweat, which could cause you to slip if you were directly on a floor. The mat helps minimize potential slipping and can add to the safety of your practice. There are a variety of different mats you can use.
Optional Yoga Accessories
Yoga Mat Bag - It helps you carry your yoga mat to and from class. Some of them also have room for other items such as a change of clothes, your keys, and wallet.
Yoga dvds - If you are not taking classes, they can provide you with wonderful instruction, often from top teachers.
Yoga Props - There are a variety of props that can help you with your form, especially if you are a beginner.
One of the least mentioned, but what I feel is one of the most important yoga accessories, is a water bottle. During your practice, your body will likely sweat and release toxins. Water is necessary to help you flush out the toxins and replenish any lost fluids. After your practice you will probably be thirsty, so cool, refreshing water will seem like a wonderful reward after all your hard work.
When you begin practicing, you may decide to just buy the standard items. As you advance, you will very likely decide to purchase some other yoga accessories to help you develop and grow.

Coaching Sports For All The Right Reasons

July 26th, 2008

The Glove
It was during a March evening in 2002 that I received word that my grandfather was dying. I drove the four and a half hours to Ironwood, Michigan in a snowstorm to say goodbye. I was able to see my grandpa and he was able to recognize me and acknowledge that I was there.
The next morning, he was gone. The doctors said that they were not sure how he had survived for so long. He had many health conditions and a lot of pain that he hadn’t really shown on the outside. Yet, he had visited my grandmother every day in the nursing home where she had moved just a few months before. The staff marveled at the fact that my grandpa could even make it up the stairs each day. But, he did it. He was always there to help someone else.
I stayed in the town where my grandfather had been born, lived and now passed on. The funeral was scheduled for just a couple of days later. I thought a lot about my grandfather during this time. He had inspired me to be an athlete and coach. I remember him showing me the pictures and ribbons that he had won as a hurdler in track and field. But his real love was baseball. He was a great first baseman who played for a while with the Union City Greyhounds farm team and even had a try out for the St. Louis Cardinals. Rumor has it that he left baseball to come back for my grandmother. He continued to play ball in his home town. When times were tough and jobs were scarce, my grandfather was offered a job at the mine… if he would also play on the company’s baseball team.
Two days passed and the preparations for the funeral were made. I spent a lot of the time at my aunt’s house with the rest of my family. Late in the morning, there was a knock on the door. An older gentleman stood outside and carried a small object under one arm. My aunt answered the door and had a short conversation with the man. He then handed her the object, said goodbye and walked off.
My aunt entered the room looking sad but strangely happy at the same time. In her hands, she cradled a baseball glove. It was old and battered and some of the laces were missing but you could still see the words US ARMY branded into the leather. My aunt set the glove on the table and filled the rest of us in on what had just happened.
“This was Dad’s glove from the Army,” she said. “Remember that when he got back from the war, he helped to start the first little league here in town. That man was a member of Dad’s first team. His family didn’t have much money and he couldn’t afford to buy a baseball glove. Dad gave him his so that he could play like the rest of the boys.”
The man had gone on to say that he had never forgotten my grandfather’s generosity. He had kept and cherished the glove for over 45 years. He had seen my grandpa’s obituary in the newspaper and had wanted to return the glove to the family and let us know what a great coach, and man, my grandfather had been.
The glove was put on display at my grandpa’s funeral. And, of course, the minister’s sermon contained many allusions to sports and frequent quotes from A Field of Dreams. All this made me ever so proud of my grandfather who enjoyed coaching and passing on his love of athletics to the youth in his town. It also made me remember why I chose to be a coach.
How many times have you wondered, “Why do people coach? Why do they give up their time and energy for little or no money, sometimes even less respect and the opportunity to be targeted by parents and fans alike?”
That cold and snowy March day, I was reminded of the answers to those questions. We coach to touch the youth. To instill values into young people that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. We coach to make a difference and to show the right way to play, work and live. We coach so that, even 45 years can pass without a man forgetting his coach and the impact that he had made on a young boy’s life.
